The Importance of Youth Social Action
Teona talks about how, in today’s ever-changing cultural landscape, young people are a powerful force for good.
In today’s ever-changing cultural landscape, young people are a powerful force for good. Throughout history, young people have played a crucial role in driving change – using different forms of activism to push issues to the top of the agenda and pave the way towards a better society. But with a plethora of social barriers still facing young people, it is clear that they must be at the forefront of this mission.
Young people are often excluded from the decisions and conversations that affect them. It is, then, of increasing importance that services are shaped around what matters to them. That’s why at Envision, being youth-led is the essence of everything we do. We recognise young people as an untapped power, and harness this through social action, to encourage them to learn how to create positive change in their communities.
So, why is youth social action so important?
Social action ignites a positive attitude, and helps young people navigate the world around them with curiosity and hope. It provides a productive outlet for young people to explore and respond to challenges. It equips young people with the essential skills they need to succeed in school, work, life and beyond, and signposts them to a wide spectrum of interests and passions.
It enhances social cohesion and mobility, arming young people with lifelong values and expanding their compassion and open-mindedness. It enables them to use their passion and creativity to bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to the table.
It motivates a sense of social responsibility – inspiring them at a critical juncture in their lives and influencing them to become more active citizens. It creates a sense of purpose and connects young people to like-minded peers to build new communities and support existing ones. It also makes them more likely to participate in social action more frequently as they get older and continue making positive contributions.
This is why Envision exists and continues to serve and empower young people – because young people’s voices are not just helpful, but essential.
