Tom, a valued employee at Direct Line Group, is now a valued member of the Envision family too after mentoring a group of young people from Abbeywood Community School. Tom took the opportunity to become a mentor after hearing about his colleague’s journey mentoring on the Envision Programme with a previous cohort. He was inspired by the amazing experience she had going through the process and decided to get involved.
Reminiscing about his first mentoring session, Tom recalled how nervous the young people looked when they walked into the big office environment. He understood the importance of making them feel at ease and embraced the challenge of making them comfortable throughout the journey. Despite some initial nerves of his own, Tom embraced the challenge and threw himself into the journey whole-heartedly.
Many of the young people from the Abbeywood team barely knew each other at first. Tom recognized the significance of bringing them together and building a sense of unity in order for their project to progress and be a success. By week 6, with Tom’s support and promotion, the group ran a successful bake sale at the Direct Line Group offices to raise money for Young Lives vs Cancer. Witnessing their participation and teamwork was an incredible experience for Tom.
Fast forward to the final and Tom was cheering his young people on as they delivered a “pretty flawless” presentation to an audience of over a hundred people! However, what impressed him the most was not just the quality of their presentation but the courage they displayed. Their bravery made Tom immensely proud of their journey and achievements.
After awarding Tom Mentor of The Year, we at Envision are very pleased that Tom has already signed up again for his second year of mentoring!
