2012 Grad - Victoria

Victoria was an Envision student in Birmingham during her time at College   -  By Eleanor Lloyd

Envision took my interest in volunteering to the next level as we were the ones who led the project, it wasn’t organised for us so when we achieved our goals it really built our confidence

Envision project

Victoria’s team ‘Challenge Life’ fundraised over £500 for the Birmingham based charity Ethar Relief, who work with Eritrean refugees in Sudan. They were motivated to do this because two of the team members were from Eritrea. They used creative fundraising ideas such as hosting a talent show in their college and won the ‘Global Project of the Year’ award.

Envision memory

My favourite moment was definitely the talent show; we combined this with presenting about why we were fundraising for the charity. We talked about food and shelter, education and jobs, refugees and global poverty – we made it educative. The audience really listened; it hit them as hard as it had hit us. There isn’t much information out there so it was really beneficial for them to learn about these issues. At that moment I realised we were making change in our community and on a global scale.

What are you doing now?

Victoria is currently on an internship learning to become a fitness and health coach. Since being involved with Envision she has also volunteered with the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK and the Royal National Institute of Blind People.

What did you get out of Envision?

Envision helped me realise my ability in terms of my communication skills, as we presented in front of a large audience. This skill is really important in my current job where I regularly teach fitness classes to groups.

I am really proud of my achievements as part of the Envision team (I still wear the t-shirt proudly). If I hadn’t of done Envision I would not have had an experience that I was so proud of and the job opportunities that I have had would have been different. I got job offers and opportunities from charities when people saw Envision on my CV and every time I went for an interview they loved for me to talk about it – it has made for some interesting conversations!
